AURI Hosts Discussion on the Future of Anaerobic Digestion at 2022 Minnesota Renewable Energy Roundtable

The Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) is hosting a discussion on the emerging landscape of renewable energy made from biomass feedstocks through anaerobic digestion at its annual Minnesota Renewable Energy Roundtable Dec. 1, 2022.

The event begins at Farmamerica: MN Agricultural Interpretive Center with several leading experts in the field discussing the scientific and economic drivers of anaerobic digestion. It concludes at AURI’s laboratory with a guided tour of a pilot-scale anaerobic digester. Both locations are in Waseca, Minn. In-person and virtual attendance options are available. The event is free and open to the public but pre-registration is required.

Anaerobic digestion is a process by which bacteria break down organic matter in a digester and produce biogas – a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide – and digestate. The biogas can be used as an energy source for renewable natural gas, heat, electricity and transportation. The digestate is the plant nutrient rich residual material which can be composted, land applied, used as livestock bedding and in other applications. New anaerobic digestion applications and projects are emerging at rapid pace. According to Fairfield Market Research, global revenue in the field is projected to grow to $18.5 billion by 2027, up from $7 billion in 2020.

The 2022 Minnesota Renewable Energy Roundtable is co-sponsored by: Avisen Boutique Business Law, Bioeconomy Coalition of Minnesota, CenterPoint Energy, Compeer Financial, Nature Energy, Vanguard Renewables and Xcel Energy.

The Minnesota Renewable Energy Roundtable is designed to catalyze discussion and innovation centered on how producers and businesses in Minnesota and beyond can capitalize on these advancements to the overall benefit of the region’s agriculture economy.
