The Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) is pleased to present The Biogas Opportunity for Minnesota Farmers: A Business Guide for On-farm Anaerobic Digestion.
The objective of this guide is to introduce the concept of on-farm anaerobic digestion (AD) and its specific relevance to Minnesota farmers. The on-farm AD opportunity is worth investigating for farms that manage any amount of manure. This guide will explore the AD opportunity and explain existing and potential on-farm business models and considerations. Installing an on-farm AD can offer numerous benefits, including additional income, improved nutrient recovery and reuse, energy production, water quality enhancement, and odor and greenhouse gas reductions. Despite these benefits, on-farm AD is not without risk. Producers should thoroughly investigate the benefits and risks associated with installing an AD system. While AD is not a new technology, the industry is still emerging in Minnesota and is rapidly changing. Producers are encouraged to consult their peers and professionals in the industry to learn as much as they can about the on-farm AD opportunity.
